India Recommences Tourist Visa Processing for Chinese Visitors
Starting this Friday, Chinese citizens will be eligible to apply for tourist visas to travel to India, according to an official statement posted on Weibo by the Indian Embassy.
This move marks the first reopening of tourist visa applications for Chinese travelers since 2020.
The decision follows ongoing efforts by New Delhi and Beijing to restore diplomatic relations after a surge in tensions triggered by deadly clashes in 2020 along the contested border in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers.
At a press briefing in Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun described the development as encouraging: “We have noted this positive move. Making cross-border travel easier serves the common interest of all parties.”
He further emphasized, “China stands ready to maintain communication, coordination with India to keep facilitating people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.”
Despite the visa service resumption, India has not yet reinstated direct flights to China, keeping air travel restrictions in place.
